My theory is, way back when Zane tried to do the coin store, he got all lathered up into a mania and ended up doing a little crank to get through all the work as fast as possible.
To me that is a sign that working into big dreams is a major trigger for him to dabble (relapse) on crank.
I bet when they were finishing the van, he ended up taking a chemical short cut just as the project was about to end.
A few days of excitement lead to him being sour and crazed and Priss put the pieces together that the little rescue project was a lot more complex than she thought.
She probably peaced out and Zane is wandering around Southern California trying to hustle enough money to get a phone plan, since she immediately took him off hers.
