The feelings we have when romantic love doesn't work out are almost certainly linked to the subconscious (body mind) being angry that the attempt to reproduce was unsuccessful.
As far as people who HAVE reproduced together, if there's any sadness when they part it's because they had built some type of security together, the loss of which is lamented by the subconscious/body mind... because resources/security are needed to properly care for offspring. If both parties are still of childbearing age, the hurt feelings upon dissolution of the relationship may be due to the security being thwarted, AND the fact that no further progeny will be made with that trusted and reputable source.
