Ubuntu is based on Debian. I just use straight Debian. You can install any desktop UI you want on it. I chose the default Cinnamon interface, and it suits me fine as a Windows XP/7 fan.

It's the same as installing from a Windows disc, except you make your own disc. The distribution can be downloaded with BitTorrent if you're in a hurry. Burn the downloaded files onto CD-ROMs and run them. I made my discs on my current computer while it was still running Windows 10.

If you buy a new computer, make sure the hardware is specifically designed for, or compatible with, Linux. I was lucky enough to find the firmware to make it work on a non-compatible system, but there are no guarantees if you go that route. Best to get one that'll load straight from the discs with no hassles.
If you get a PC with Debian pre-installed, you'll have no worries if you decide to reinstall later. Linux systems rarely need to
be rebooted or reinstalled though.
