I was always a denier that civil war would break out in this country...

The first civil war was about the Southern states asserting their rights against the Federal government.
Or. more specifically, the wealthy elites in the Southern states defending their lucrative businesses against the Federal government. The ordinary people on both sides probably didn't give a rat's ass about the conflict, but, as usual, they were whipped into a patriotic fervor by propagandists and ended up dying over it.
