Why would anyone actually "dunk" a donut in coffee?

That sounds nasty and wrong.

It would get the coffee dirty.

Why not simply take a bite of donut and then get a mouthful of coffee?

Dunking makes no sense. I hope the popularity of this practice has been greatly exaggerated.
