I feel trapped. I'm working two dead end jobs to make ends meet. I'm lucky if I get one day off per week, and that's not enough for the tiredness to drain away. I'm permanently tired down to my bones. Even when I do get a day off, my stepmom finds chores for me to do if she finds out I'm not working that day. I can't just take a day off to relax and (God forbid) enjoy cooking and eating a home-cooked meal. If she sees me deriving joy from anything, however insignificant, she does her level best to ruin it.

I'm months behind in my payments since I was laid off from my real job in 2017. It will take forever to get caught up now that I'm earning half as much. Not to mention working myself half to death while doing so. But that's what I'm expected to do.

My stepmom only gives a rat's ass about a handful of people, and they're all blood relatives of hers. Everyone else exists to serve them and make life convenient for them. When she hollers, you'd best jump. But when it comes to anything I need, I can just go fuck myself.

She persuaded me to move back here and rent her mom's old house in September by promising to take me to Oklahoma to get my stuff out of storage, where it's been for three years. But no sooner had I moved in than she said, "I'm not going to Oklahoma. You need to raise the money to get it yourself." So I'm still essentially living out of a suitcase some eight months later.

Now I'm a month behind in rent due to the COVID-19 staycation. I can't just pay up and leave. I wouldn't have the money for another place even if I could.

I believe the whole situation was designed from the start so she'd have a servant beholden to her, who couldn't refuse to do her bidding.

I believe she intends to get my dad's land and all of his possessions when he dies and leave me with nothing. I don't think she has any legal footing there. She isn't married to my dad, and Louisiana isn't a common law state.

He's 71 or 72, and she's 65. She's not very attractive at all.

I don't think they'll ever get married. I asked them once why they haven't married, and she said it would mess up their Social Security benefits or something.

Then again, she might marry him on his deathbed just to inherit everything. I wouldn't put it past her.

My dad has shown signs lately of being disgruntled about how much of his money she spends. Hopefully he'll wise up and not fuck over his surviving children on her account.

To be fair, she took care of him when he had his heart attack and stroke. Again, that may have just been to further endear herself to him so she can get all of his shit. I honestly don't know. There's some reason she puts up with him. She doesn't seem the type to form sentimental attachments outside her own tribe. Especially not to a jerk like my dad.

She actually doesn't need my dad's land. She made $49,000 from the sale of land she owned in Arkansas. She co-owns her mom's house (the one I live in) with her sister, and she bought the land next door to it for her son and his wife to live on.

Anyway, about the dying cat.

Elvis either got into a fight or got attacked by another animal. I'm thinking it must've been a much larger animal because of the size of the puncture wound in his chest.

The wound grew and grew until it became a huge gaping hole in his chest. I'm frankly amazed that he's still alive. I've been wanting to take him to the vet for a week, but could never get time off to do it.

I told my stepmom about all of this, but she was uninterested. I didn't bother asking her to take him to the vet for me. I don't ask any of them for anything. There are no favors from them without strings attached.

My stepmom's sister and daughter-and-law told me I needed to get a cat because the house had mice.

I didn't even get to pick or name my own cat. My stepmom already had one lined up for me. I was wary of that scenario from the outset. You have to get a cat when it's a small kitten and raise it yourself. Yanking a cat from an established home and putting it in a new home seldom ends well. She didn't know all of this because she's not a "cat person."

Nevertheless, it's her way or the highway.

In hindsight, it looks like another ploy to get me leveraged so I wouldn't be able to just throw my shit in the car and leave. But since I took on the responsibility for Elvis's welfare, I had to take him to the vet. I couldn't let him die a slow, agonizing death with a gaping, stinking hole in his chest. Having thrust this responsibility upon me herself, you'd think she'd understand that. But no.

Her clan is evidently accustomed to a much higher standard of living than we poor Louisiana white trash are used to. Their attitudes about everything scream it loud and clear. They expect the best of everything, and they expect other people to wait on them hand and foot.

Her daughter-in-law has expensive tastes. UPS or FedEx arrives over there every other day with some shit she ordered. They're Jehovah's Witnesses, and the husband is a minister. Yet they live a life of conspicuous mass consumption. Maybe they think they're going to get to keep it all when Jehovah's kingdom is established on this earth? I invariably end up having to haul away the trash and empty boxes from over there.

To be honest, their house and yard look completely out of place in this poor small town neighborhood. My neighbor on the other side is a black woman with five kids, evidently on welfare.
