Young folks' reading and writing on YouTube
#1
I've been noticing some disturbing trends in video narration recently.

And I'm not talking about shitty text-to-speech apps. I'm talking about live narrators.

The first one involves word pronunciation. A lot of young people nowadays put the emphasis on the wrong syllable in words such as "component" and "distribute." The particular pronunciation of "component" in question is one I've only heard in obscure technical videos from the 1960s before now.

Worse than that is how video narrators and people in the comments section put a full stop in the middle of a sentence and continue the rest of the sentence as though beginning a new one. I don't know if the narrators are poor readers or simply reading from a poorly written script and making no effort to correct it.

Also, a lot of commenters arbitrarily capitalize words in the middle of a sentence in a style reminiscent of many pre-18th century writings.

Oh, and another thing.

If you've been planning on getting your pilot's "lisance," why haven't you learned to spell "license?"

I mean the correct spelling is probably right there in front of you in the coursework and application.

Honestly, Dev...

It's because they stopped having kids do math in their heads, let them start using calculators...

They stopped teaching them to write in cursive, and now they probably let them use smartphones to Google shit, including correct spellings, just so they can pass the grades by the seat of their pants.

The shit you're seeing in comments section is WITH SPELL CHECK ON. Never forget that. It's WITH AUTO CORRECT ON.

Imagine how fucking retarded everyone would sound these days if it weren't for those features?

Not to mention those features fostering an insane amount of laziness...

The truth is Dev...

People really are just that fucking retarded.

They are.

One of my theories has it that they haven't had enough face-to-face conversations to know how to speak naturally. They seem to be following the lead of the aforementioned shitty text-to-speech apps. If that's the case, they couldn't have been around before smaht phones.

Another thing I've seen is commenters complaining that an older narrator speaks too slowly, when he's speaking at a perfectly normal speed. It's as though they've been conditioned to think everything should be jump-cut to remove every last bit of aural whitespace.

Not to mention the speed adjust function...
