These are just some survival menus I like coming up with.

It's amazing how calorie dense some of those processed foods are.

You can fit those items in a small box and some of them have at least a year shelf life.

You'll need at least 2 weeks, a fortnight, of emergency food waitng for your National Guard to show up, a la New Orleans after Katrina.

LOL. Maybe that's why they call it a "Fort Night".

It might have taken soldiers from the closest frontier fort about two weeks to arrive and quell any trouble.

Ah okay, see I knew I was getting army ration vibes with this. I Google'd the cookies and kind of got that idea, and the peanut butter was the other giveaway.

The soda though, I mean that's a luxury the soldiers never get. All their drinks come in packets.

I drink instant coffee. I know it's not the healthiest due to the acrylamide and possibly other things, but it's so fucking good. I call it "COFFEE, INSTANT" in my head.

Hmmmmmm...

I think I see exactly where you're going with this now.

Point well taken.

Maybe I should stop being a cookie snob and keep some around.

It's a better approach than relying on food that requires water (rice, beans, etc).

Some of my 2020 stock of peanut butter is still around, but it's sorta rancid at this point...

I guess next time I just wouldn't buy as much.

One of the biggest things about (non-freeze dried) food storage is knowing when to start eating it, giving it away, changing it out, etc.

You just need a few weeks of food to have an edge over everyone else.

People don't starve for ever, they only starve for a few weeks.

After weeks without food, those people aren't a threat anymore because they won't have the energy to do anything, even look for food.

People also put their focus into food and forget about water.

You can have all the food you need, but if you start drinking dirty water everything cascades from there.

You have to wonder how big a part drinking water played in famines.

If you're not getting enough food, will you be getting enough clean water?

I have a feeling that lots of deaths occured in famines because of water bourne diseases.

Water is always the problem.

That's why the "cheapest" prepper foods (dry rice and beans) are really not a solution.

I've known rich preppers and poor preppers, and none of them had their water on lock.

Food going rancid is a huge problem though. That's the concern with stuff like cookies. You're better off with peanut butter by itself because you can still eat it even after it's gone off a little bit. You know when the line has been crossed. It lasts for 4 years easily, past that you're gonna be eating low key rancid PB but... I mean, that's a longer shelf life than cookies.

I think a good approach is stocking up on peanut butter and making hardtack to go with it. Hardtack is time consuming to make but it stores well if it's kept in proper conditions.

I would get psyllium husk powder, peanut butter, and make a bunch of hardtack. A few 55 gallon drums for water, activated charcoal, and a few different kinds of water filtration systems. Bulk supply of coffee filters. And actually, throw some instant coffee in the stash too for a mood lifter. Hugely important TBH. Tobacco and rolling papers. Morale boosts can't be underestimated. Also, vodka.

The cans of sweet corn have a good amount of water in them and lasts for years.

Yeah, I will always favor canned goods above all else. All vegetables (except for tomatoes, too high acid causes can failure, same with pineapple) corned beef, any kind of fish, and no pop top cans if possible. I really am not a fan of the pop top cans... it's convenient, sure, but they can fail.
