I've given it a lot of thought and I'm pretty sure this song has mainly been used to boost tourism to Africa.

Like, the guy who wrote it probably didn't have that intention, I'm not saying it's a conspiracy or anything...

But I think it's undeniable that this song probably made a lot of people want to go to Africa and I bet they had a tourism boom for YEARS after it came out in 1982.

It probably still inspires people to go to Africa.

Every time a meme about it goes viral again, there's probably a measurable boost in African tourism.

I’ve never seen the video before so this is just about the song itself. To me it's a song that has always made me think of a special girl I knew a long time ago in Phoenix when the song first came out. The reference to Africa, in my heart , got connected to an old Doors song (her favorite band) when Jim Morrison asked "remember when we were in Africa?". Somehow that got all tangled up in my emotions for her when she left and forever after that whenever I've heard that Toto song I'm awash in memories of her, missing her still all these decades later. Probably sounds pretty stupid and wimpy I'm sure, but nonetheless that is what it means to me.

It's beautiful, but it's also really sad... this feeling seems to be fundamental to the plight of humanity.

Music triggers those kinds of memories though... if there was no modern music as we know it, I wonder if other things would strike up this kind of nostalgia in us?

If it wasn't music invoking these strong memories and feelings, what would it be? I don't think I've ever experienced them when music wasn't involved.

Yes, I think you are right, at least for me it’s always been the music.  It can just erase the years and the circumstances and you are right back to where and when whatever it reminds you of happened as if no intervening time and distance had occurred.  While the Toto/Africa song has had by far the strongest affect (or is it effect?  I can never keep that straight) on me, there are many songs that get me lost in time like that.

NGL though, the last time I listened to Africa on repeat for a super long time...

Was the last time. Rofl.

I mean, not saying it won't happen again someday but...

I got my fill.
