Someone once described the Chinese as soulless insects. I can't really say he was wrong. For all of their bragging about their 7,000 years of civilization and culture, the culture of modern day China under Communist rule has little to commend it.
Pick pocketing, kidnapping, and violent assault are rampant. If you're a victim of crime, nobody will help you. People do not give a fuck. A favorite saying in China is "Oh well, nothing can be done." They say it all the time, in every imaginable context.
And now, mainstream media outlets such as the BBC and NBC are reporting that the Chinese government is rounding up Muslims and sending them to concentration camps:
