Biblically, the purpose of humanity was to take care of the animals and the planet itself.
As soon as they cease to do these things as their main focus, they are obsolete.
Proliferation was important early on in humanity so that there would be plenty of people and human life would be self-sustainable...
This wasn't for the purpose of humanity itself, but for the planet and the animals humanity was created to take care of.
These days it's not as important to proliferate... right now, the biggest focus is care of the animals (and the planet).
There are plenty of people, we don't need more. Unfortunately, the people who are here have been failing at their literal only purpose.
Blame it on human greed, blame it on war, blame it on "the elite"... none of it is the real cause of humanity's demise.
If humanity meets its end, it's because they failed to do their duty here on this planet and they were no longer effective.
