so they've had these nuclear powered laser drilling machines that can dig a mile a day since the 50s. they added to the vast underground tunnel network under north america, which is also connected to the rest of the world. [and the inner earth]
i put forth the theory that one of these laser drills were deployed by the military / corps, and ran into a pocket of water accidentally. this fucked it up and killed the operators. the water then froze outside the drill's heat radius sealing it in. thus it sits there, emitting heat in its radius.
this also works with a nuclear sub trying to tunnel in from the ocean.
