I think social media addicts don't really value their time anyway, otherwise they'd be doing something worthwhile with it. So they haven't really lost anything by pissing away their time posting vapid drivel on Faecesbook.

People who do have something worthwhile to contribute should definitely have their own platform, or use a platform based on public standards that guarantee their ability to control and preserve their own content. Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the Web originally envisioned it as such and is now working on extensions to enable that type of scenario.
