Fear and negative feelings of all kinds are what cause defeat.

It's better to have no fear (or other negative emotions) to a psychotic degree than it is to have those feelings.

You just have to give up the part of you that clings to your reality in order to survive and maintain 'normalcy'...

A lot of people can't do that because it makes them feel too unstable, although I would argue they've never REALLY tried it so they couldn't possibly know what effect it really has on them.

They are just scared to let go and be willing to forfeit the game at any time with minimal fight...

See the ironic beauty of the battle is that the harder you hold onto it and white knuckle it, the more you lose it.
