Kitty and Matt become endeared to the viewer and once you get to know their history, it makes you partial to Kitty (or Matt) regardless of what other guest characters are brought on the show.

In season 2 I really started to notice how amazing Miss Kitty's smile is... both she and Matt had exceptionally great looking smiles.

I think both Amanda Blake and James Arness just sort of decided to become their characters.
Either they already were them, and it's just one and the same, or they made the choice to devote themselves to it at that deep of a level.

It's pretty plainly stated and noted about James Arness... but I think it was just as true for Amanda Blake. The clues are there.

Amanda Blake seemed destined for her role...
https://i.imgur.com/BeDQFD0.jpg That's her in a 1952 promo for a movie. James Arness's autobiography addressed Blake's interest in the role of Miss Kitty stemming from her love of the radio show. Apparently she showed up every day to be let in for audition until they finally agreed to see her, and she was immediately hired.

She definitely enjoyed being Miss Kitty in this episode. Kitty's personality is starting to show. I wonder if she kept any of the dresses. Carolyn Jones kept her Morticia wig and costume, and treasured them. Trivia: What did Jones have in common with Erin Gray from Buck Rogers in the 25th Century? They both had their tight costumes sewn onto them for every episode. (They put Gray in a silly space stewardess outfit in S2 though.)

S3 E8 - "Born to Hang"
Sitting down to Gunsmoke with another epic dinner. 2:17 keep his mouth shut huh? Well if they're not doing anything wrong then why would he need to keep his mouth shut? 2:55 well I bet you do... seems like you've had a lot of practice. 3:11 these guys are just straight up murderers. 4:40 ooh, I just love a hero... *heart eyes* 5:50 I have a feeling this guy's totally gonna get killed anyway though, lmao. 8:27 I hope this guy really does leave and get out of there, I'd hate to see him come to any trouble... he's a respectable fella. 10:00 this dude's kinda dumb. 12:10 man that looks like a boring as hell life. What would you do?? You'd damn near have to be an outlaw or a saloon girl to survive the boredom. 14:50 it's obviously a trick, Chester, come on man. 16:20 lol that was great. 17:05 he almost never looks better than after he's killed a man... https://i.imgur.com/BJq289J.png 17:40 that's like the weirdest cry I've ever heard. 19:29 this was a great scene, from Chester stumbling out of the door to the end when Doc asks if there's gonna be any shootin'. I'm having some Mercury retrograde problems with playback on this disc so I'm gonna have to post this before I've seen the ending.

Back in action... there was hair on the disc (no idea).

God, this guy who runs the Dodge House is always sooooo sketchy.

22:50 is he gonna shoot him in the dick!!?!?!?!

24:20 this is the OFFICIAL FIRST HANGING that takes place on the show, season 3. That's how long it took for a bad guy to actually live to be hanged.

Chester's chatting up a pretty young blonde. She can't hold a candle to Kitty in that dress she wore in E19 though.

Kitty has developed a pronounced country accent in this episode.

Matt's writing with a ballpoint pen. In the 1880s.

Belle, the pretty young blonde, is looking old and haggard by the end of the episode.

Kitty's costume designer was awesome. The asymmetrical black straps on the dress she's wearing at the beginning of the episode seem rather unconventional for the 1880s.

A general observation about the last few episodes.
Kitty doesn't appear in a couple of episodes. Matt and Chester are the only two permanent cast members credited in at least one episode. When she reappears, Blake's acting is more animated, as if she's really starting to step into the role. Gotta wonder what happened behind the scenes during that time.

Cuz she always looked that way, but that was just her without makeup. We've seen a fresh faced Kitty on here in other episodes, especially the one where Chester gets cholera, and she looked great in comparison. |
