I don't think I've ever done it with one of my own songs before.

that strikes me as very odd. when i was composing music, i'd end up listening to a track hundreds of times as i went along. some of them were very much shitty when listened to once, but if you set them on repeat they'd get better and better, like settling into a deep and circuitous groove.
