This is not about judgement...
It's about compassion for those suffering.
A cry for help should be responded to with an offer for assistance, and in a perfect world, everyone would get the help they need.
But many times, they don't.
And it can end badly.
I try to tell people there is no shame in seeking help from a mental health professional. That's what they're there for, and they spent a considerable portion of their lives (and money) to be in a position to help you someday.
There's not a lot more you can do besides encourage people to seek help... grown adults can't be forced to do a thing, and as we've seen in cases like Eugenia Cooney's, not even people who love them can get through to them a lot of the time.
Still, there's something to be said for attempting to do our part.
At least I can sleep at night knowing I tried in the situations that have been presented to me where I had the option to say something.
