A gentle breeze in the misty alley presaged Ms. Delicato's emergence from the agency door. Johnny, startled, backed into a shaded corner beside the dumpster as he watched Delia come into view just below a rickety old night lamp hanging just above the IPA's doorway. She stood confidently, commanding every bit of the night's respect, even in this empty alleyway. Looking cautiously to her right, then her left, her gaze traveled slowly towards her unsuspecting visitor. "You gonna hide back there all night?" she called out. Surprized by her laser-like intuition, Johnny sheepishly comes forward from the darkness. "What gave me away?" he questioned. "Well, I figured you for that type" she returned. He begins slowly walking towards her. "And what type is that?" he volleyed. "Dependable. And a little stupid. But mostly dependable" she said. By this time he was standing beside her. The air chilled to a perfect frost, their breath streaming in unison like wisps of cigarette smoke. "So what now?" Johnny poses. Delia turns her head to the right, taking in the lighter end of the alleyway before reaffixing her eyes upon Johnny's stern expression. "Now? Now you help me find this thing" she said in an almost demanding tone. "I need someone who knows the area, the streets, and all the dark places that those of an unsavory nature might call home. Are you up for that?" she asked. Johnny stared deeply into her assured eyes for a moment before answering. "Right this way, Ms. Delicato" as he motions her to lead the way.

All submissions to the storyline are welcome...
I'm an infamous never-finisher. But I do think I'm sort of in love with Detective Delicato, maybe just a little bit.

I mean, she's hot. She's really hot.

As Johnny and Delicato reached the end of the alley, they stood inches apart, looking up
into the hazy blue-black of the star-filled sky. "Hard to believe there's so much beauty up there when there's so much filth down here." he said. Delicato turned with a twist of surprize. "I never took you for the sensitive kind" she said accusingly. Johnny lowered his gaze from the sky to rest upon her fair, delicate features. "A man would be a fool not to notice such a thing" he returned solidly. Her face gave way to the slightest hint of a would-be smile. "This line of work is no place for the foolish" she added. Suddenly, there came a loud crash from across the street. They both shot a glance at once to see several metal trash cans falling over and into the street as a shadowed figure ran in the opposite direction. Without hesitation, Detective Delicato gave chase, leaving Johnny to stand in a momentary stupor. "Hey, wait a minute!" he blurted as he joined the race. Things were about to get interesting. Or dangerous. In this town, it was usually both.

As Johnny reached the middle of the street, a car sped by nearly clipping him.
A horn blasted as a voice could be heard yelling "What are you doin??" Johnny caught himself just short of being hit. Two seconds to realize, then back to it. He was trailing Delicato but not by much. Her sprint was enlivened by purpose, a strong need to return Home. And that could only happen by catching this, Chester. She was closing in when with a flash, she threw a heel and took a hard tumble to the pavement. Johnny raced to her assistance. "No, no, don't stop! Keep after him! Go! Go!" yelled the dazed Detective. With no time to lose, Johnny had to make a snap decision. His mind said Go but all other faculties said Stay. And that's what he did. "Are you OK?" he questioned, kneeling beside her. "Don't worry about me, GO, they're getting away!!" she exclaimed. He took notice of her badly torn stockings and skinned knee. "You're hurt" he said softly. "I'm fine! It doesn't matter! What the Hell is wrong with you?" she said in a huff. Johnny raised himself to a standing position, looking down upon the fallen beauty. In all of her powerful glory, the all-business "Detective" who always got her man, lay jarred and angry in the road. The abraded knee, the hair now in her face and the broken high heel just feet away painted an entirely different picture of who this lady really was. In the bar, she was Detective Delicato. But here, in this mess on the street, she was Delia. Not an imposing figure to be reckoned with but a sweet gentle girl, who for a brief few moments stepped down from her pedestal to join the rest of us sorry souls in our Everdayhood. She didn't know it, but Johnny saw it all. And that's when he knew this case was going to be more than he bargained for. "Please" as he reached down to take her hand. "I can get up myself!" Delicato barked. Dusting herself off, she managed to pull herself together just a tad and walked over to retrieve her lost heel. "I can't believe you let him get away! This could've been open & shut, TONIGHT, but no YOU had to stop!" she railed. As she turned to walk away, Johnny stood staring. "It wasn't our guy" he said calmly. Delicato turned sharply to face him. "And how exactly do you know that?" she puzzled with fury. He broke a faint smile before answering. "Because the guy who got away was a local drunk and petty B & E artist. Mitchell Mahoney" he said. "Must've run him in two dozen times in the last six months. So it wasn't our guy." he continued. Delicato stood in the dimly lit side street finding her thoughts. Anger melting into embarrassment. "Well that only means that Chester is STILL out there!" said the Detective. Johnny walked towards her smiling. "So I guess that means we've still got work to do" he said coyly. They walked side by side up the middle of the empty street in silence.

Well to be fair, if you look at my typing patterns...
You can see that five word limits are basically impossible for me to operate within.

But yeah, I'm that asshole who broke the rules.
Listen, Detective Delicato is a motherfucking renegade, okay.

Detective Delicato needs some D.

And I think we need to talk about how Delia's high heels got sabotaged...
They've tried countless ways to foil her and take her out... We need to talk about how Agent Atwood sneaked into Delia's living quarters in the middle of the night, sabotaged her shoe, and then creepily watched her sleep and stroked her hair before disappearing undetected into the night. We need to.

Yep. If a Veronica Lake look-alike were gonna get some D, that feller right there should be the one to administer it.

Weird mental block: I keep picturing Delicato being a brunette. In my mind, when seeing
the scenes play out. I know MO chose VL as her character blueprint but I still find myself visualizing Ms. Tierney [with long hair] as Delia. Derp @ me, but yeah... More practice! lol

You know what, you can be in charge of the alternate universe where Delicato is played by Gene Tierney/the roles are reversed.
Your version is inspired by seeing her that way, my version is inspired by the Veronica Lake version. |
